Most "free rank trackers" are either a one-off checker that forgets the position it just showed, or a paid tool with a 14-day trial. Eleven tools are free in some real sense. Below is the exact limit of each, from its own pricing or help page, split into Google Maps trackers and organic keyword trackers, because you need one of each.
The short answer: the best free rank tracker for each job
For Google Maps rankings, use the GTrack Free plan. According to the Google Maps rank tracker product page it is "$0 forever" with 200 credits a month, grids up to 5x5, one tracked competitor and public report URLs, and the first scan needs no account at all. It and localseotool.io are the only Maps grid trackers here whose free allowance comes back every month; GeoRanker and BrightLocal reset daily but give you a single position, not a grid. GTrack's allowance is also not tied to one business and three keywords.
For organic Google rankings, start with Google Search Console. It costs nothing, it covers every query your site appears for, and per Google's Performance report help page it reports clicks, impressions, CTR and "the average position of the topmost result from your site". Pair it with a free daily checker (Seobility or SE Ranking, 5 checks a day each) when you want to see a live top 20 or top 100 for one keyword.
In the table, "Renews" says whether the allowance comes back monthly, daily, or not at all.
| Tool | What it tracks | Free allowance | Renews | Signup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GTrack Free plan | Google Maps, geo-grid | 200 credits a month, grids up to 5x5, 1 competitor, public report URLs | Monthly | First scan with no account; plan needs no card |
| Whitespark Local Ranking Grids | Google Maps, geo-grid | 200 credits, grids from 4 to 225 points | One-off at signup | Account, no card |
| localseotool.io Free | Google Maps, geo-grid | 1 business, 3 keywords, 10 reports a month on a 5x5 grid, 1 schedule | Monthly | Account, no card |
| GeoRanker Local Rank Checker | Position per city or country, up to 20 cities | A daily limit the page does not number | Daily | None for basic use |
| BrightLocal Local Search Results Checker | Live Google or Maps results for one location | 3 searches a day | Daily | None |
| Google Search Console | Organic average position for your own site | Every query, clicks, impressions, CTR, position | Ongoing | Google account and your site |
| Seobility Ranking Check | Organic top 20, desktop or mobile, by city | 5 checks a day on the Basic plan | Daily | Free account |
| SE Ranking Google Ranking Checker | Organic, desktop and mobile | 5 checks a day; top 100 needs an account | Daily | None for the 5 checks |
| Wincher Rank Tracker plugin | Organic, inside WordPress | 10 keywords, 1 website, 7 days of history | Ongoing | Plugin install |
| Ahrefs Webmaster Tools | Organic keywords your site ranks for | 1,000 keywords at a time per site | Ongoing | Account and site verification |
| Semrush Free | Organic, 1 demo project | 10 reports a day | Daily | Account, no card |
Two tools that rank for this search are trials, not free plans, so they are not in the table. ranktracking.io offers "14 Days / Free trial, no card needed" and then starts at $103.20 a month. Localo's pricing page lists no free plan; its free local rank checker asks you to start a 14-day trial before it shows results, and the Single Business plan is $39 a month billed yearly.
Checker or tracker: the difference that decides what "free" is worth
A rank checker answers one question once: where does this site rank for this keyword, right now, from this location. A rank tracker stores that answer and repeats the check, so next month you can see whether your work moved anything. Most free tools in the table are checkers. Of the tools here, GTrack, localseotool.io, Wincher and Search Console store every check at $0. The daily checkers (Seobility, SE Ranking, GeoRanker, BrightLocal) show a live position; Seobility and SE Ranking sell ongoing tracking as a paid product.
The reason history matters is that a single position is not stable. Google's own Performance report help page says that "Search results are specific to the time, place, device, and recent history of the person searching", which is why a query in your Search Console list can look different when you type it yourself. A checker gives you one of those snapshots. A tracker gives you the trend across many of them, which is the only number worth reporting.
For local results the place part dominates: a pizza place can be in the top 3 by its front door and absent 2 km away. That's why the Maps tools here scan a grid of GPS points instead of one spot; our post on what a Google Maps grid rank tracker is explains the mechanics.
Tip: To see a search result as if you stood at a specific address, you don't need a tool at all. Generate a location parameter with the free Google search UULE generator, add it to a Google search URL, and open it in a private window.
Free Google Maps and local rank trackers
GTrack Free plan: 200 credits a month, forever
GTrack is a geo-grid Maps tracker built by Wiremo. The product page lists the Free plan as "$0 forever" with "200 credits / mo", grids up to 5x5, "Track 1 competitor", "Public report URLs" and "1 trial scan with no signup". Credits work the same on every plan: "one credit per scan point per keyword", so a 3x3 grid with one keyword costs 9 credits and a 5x5 costs 25.
What the Free plan has that most free checkers don't: every scan is saved, so you can compare this month against last month; one competitor's Google Business Profile is tracked; and any scan can be published as a report page that opens without a login.
What the pricing table on the product page puts on paid plans only: Draw Mode for custom grid shapes ("on paid plans"), the SERP Tracker for organic keywords, API and MCP access, white-label reports, and the AI visibility tracker. Scheduled scans exist on every plan with a keyword cap: the scheduled scans guide lists up to 3 keywords per schedule on Free and 5 on Starter.
Whitespark Local Ranking Grids: 200 credits at signup
Whitespark's Local Ranking Grids page says "Get 200 free credits" with no credit card required. Each grid point costs one credit and grids run from 4 to 225 points, so 200 credits is eight 5x5 scans or four 7x7 scans. The page does not say the credits renew, and it does say that on paid plans "Unused credits expire after each billing period". Paid plans start at $10 a month for 2,000 credits. Treat it as a generous one-off trial rather than a permanent free tier.
localseotool.io Free: 10 reports a month on a 5x5 grid
The localseotool.io homepage lists a free plan with "1 business - 3 keywords", "10 reports/month - 5x5 grid", "3 AI credits + 1 schedule" and "Share links with watermark", with no credit card and credits that renew monthly. Ten 5x5 scans is 250 grid points, slightly more than GTrack's 200 credits, but it is locked to one business and three keywords, and the shared reports carry a watermark. Paid plans start at $9.99 a month.
GeoRanker Local Rank Checker: a daily limit, no login
GeoRanker's free local rank checker returns "the position in real time for the targeted locations, either cities or countries" and can compare up to 20 cities in one report. It's a checker: the page warns "there is a daily limit to our Google rank checker" without stating the number, and points you to plans from $99 a month for more keywords. No login is needed for basic use.
BrightLocal Local Search Results Checker: 3 searches a day
BrightLocal's Local Search Results Checker shows the Google or Google Maps results page for any keyword and location, "up to 3 times a day" without a subscription and 10 times a day with one. It tracks nothing, but it is the fastest way to see who is in the 3-pack in a city you don't live in.

Free organic keyword rank trackers
Google Search Console: the only free tracker with every query
Search Console is free, first-party and complete for your own site. The Performance report shows "Clicks", "Impressions", "CTR (click-through rate)" and average position, filtered by query, page, country, device, search appearance and date. The default view covers "the past three months". Position is "the average position of the topmost result from your site", so if you rank 2 and 7 for the same query the report shows 2.
Its limits are the flip side of that definition. It only covers your own site, so competitor positions are invisible. It averages every searcher's location and device, so it cannot tell you where in town you rank. And a keyword your site has never appeared for stays blank.
Seobility Ranking Check: 5 checks a day, top 20
Seobility's Ranking Check runs a "Live check of Google's top 20 search results" for one keyword and domain. You can pick the Google country domain, "choose a city to get localized results" and "switch between desktop and mobile rankings". The free Basic plan is "Free forever" with "Checks per day: 5" once you sign up. Continuous monitoring is a paid feature.
SE Ranking Google Ranking Checker: 5 attempts a day
SE Ranking's Google Ranking Checker lets you "check your Google rankings right on this landing page, free of charge", desktop and mobile, and shows "You have 5 free attempts left for today". Seeing the full top 100 requires an account ("Sign up to get top 100 results"), and history sits behind the 14-day trial of the paid plans.
Wincher Rank Tracker plugin: 10 keywords with 7 days of history
Wincher's free tier lives in its WordPress plugin: "Up to 10 keywords" on "one website" with "7 days of ranking history", plus e-mail notifications on drops and climbs. The paid subscription lifts that to an unlimited number of keywords and up to 5 years of history.
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools: the keywords your verified site already ranks for
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free on "an unlimited number of verified websites" and, through Site Explorer, lets you "See what keywords your website is ranking for in Google", limited to viewing 1,000 keywords at once. There is no dedicated rank tracker in the free tier, so you get a periodic list of ranking keywords with positions, not a daily chart per keyword.
Semrush Free: 1 demo project and 10 reports a day
Semrush's pricing page lists a free tier "For trying out the platform. No credit card required" with "1 demo project" and "10 reports per day across all vital tools".
How far 200 free credits go, in scans
Credit maths is the fair way to compare the Maps trackers, because "200 credits" and "10 reports" describe different amounts of data.
- GTrack, 200 credits a month. Eight 5x5 scans (25 credits each), or twenty-two 3x3 scans (9 credits each), or four 5x5 scans on two keywords. One keyword on a 5x5 grid every week uses 100 credits, half the allowance. Disabled pins are not billed and failed keywords are refunded.
- Whitespark, 200 credits once. The same eight 5x5 scans, but once. After that it is $10 a month for 2,000 credits.
- localseotool.io, 10 reports a month. Ten 5x5 scans on up to three keywords for one business, and the free schedule can run one of them for you.
- The daily checkers. GeoRanker and BrightLocal give you a position, not a grid. Use them to spot-check, not to track.
If a 5x5 grid a month feels thin, remember the question: is the visibility problem everywhere or only in some neighbourhoods? Our post on how often to track Google Maps rankings argues that a monthly scan of the same grid beats a daily scan you never read.
Important: A free grid tool is only useful if it scans from real GPS points. Ask how the tool collects positions before you trust the colours; the most accurate local rank tracker post covers the questions to ask.
What to do next: set up free tracking in 20 minutes
- Run the no-signup Maps scan. Open the GTrack product page, pick your business from the autocomplete, type your main keyword and read the rank at every pin. No account, no card. If the pins are green by your door and red 2 km out, you now know the problem is geographic, not a missing keyword.
- Open the Free plan and save the grid. Sign up for the $0 plan to keep that scan, then re-run the same 5x5 grid and keyword once a month. Track your closest competitor so you see their review count, categories and photos alongside your ranks. Publish the report link if someone else needs to see it.
- Connect Search Console for the organic side. Filter the Performance report to the last three months, sort queries by impressions, and note every query where you sit at positions 5 to 15. Those are the pages where a small change moves clicks.
- Spot-check with a daily checker. When Search Console shows an average of 8 for a query, run it through Seobility or SE Ranking once from your city and once on mobile to see the actual page around you.
- Upgrade only when a limit bites. The signals are specific: you want more than 3 keywords on one schedule (Starter, $19.99 a month with 5,000 credits), you need a grid bigger than 5x5 or a custom shape, you want to track more than one competitor, or you want organic keywords tracked from a chosen location and device (the SERP Tracker, also paid). Paid plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee, so a wrong guess costs nothing.
If you want to compare the paid Maps checkers before deciding, our Google Maps rank checkers compared post puts GTrack, BrightLocal, Whitespark and Local Dominator in one pricing table.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a rank tracker that is free?
Yes, but check what "free" means first. GTrack's Free plan renews 200 credits a month with 5x5 grids and keeps your scan history; localseotool.io renews 10 reports a month for one business; Wincher's WordPress plugin tracks 10 keywords with 7 days of history; Google Search Console tracks every query for your own site. Everything else here is a daily checker or a 14-day trial.
What is the best free ranking software?
For Google Maps, GTrack Free, because it renews monthly, keeps history, tracks one competitor and needs no card. For organic rankings, Google Search Console, because it covers every query your site appears for with clicks, impressions, CTR and average position. For a quick live look at one keyword, Seobility or SE Ranking, 5 checks a day each.
Is there a free website ranking checker?
Several, and none requires a card. Seobility shows the top 20 for a keyword, desktop or mobile, in a chosen city, 5 times a day on a free account. SE Ranking gives 5 attempts a day without an account. BrightLocal's Local Search Results Checker shows the Google or Maps results page for any location 3 times a day. GeoRanker checks a position across up to 20 cities with an unstated daily limit.
Can I track Google Maps rankings for free?
Yes. GTrack runs one geo-grid scan with no signup, then gives 200 credits a month on a permanent Free plan with grids up to 5x5 and one tracked competitor. Whitespark gives 200 credits once at signup and localseotool.io gives 10 reports a month on a 5x5 grid. What none of them gives you free is a grid bigger than 5x5 on GTrack or 25 points on localseotool.io; Whitespark's 200 credits stop after the first batch, and localseotool.io includes one schedule at $0 while GTrack's Free plan schedules up to 3 keywords.
Does Google Search Console track keyword rankings?
It reports the average position of the topmost result from your site for each query, across every searcher's location and device, with the default view covering the past three months. It does not show competitors, does not report a position per city, and only lists queries your site has already appeared for. That makes it a free organic tracker for your own site, not a local rank tracker.
How accurate are free rank checkers?
As accurate as the location and device they check from, and only for that moment. Google states that results are specific to the time, place, device and recent history of the searcher, so a checker that queries from a data centre can differ from what a customer sees in your city. Grid tools that scan from real GPS points, and checkers that let you set a city and a device, get closer. Whichever you use, compare like with like: same keyword, location, device and time of day.
